Jump Start Services for DB2 UDB
Objective: Quickly implement DB2 Universal Database for Linux, UNIX, and Windows.
The DB2 Universal Database Jump Start Services engagement is designed to jump start your organization
into the brave new world of DB2 Universal Database (UDB). This service provides customized assistance and
skill transfer with planning, installation, configuration, and implementation of DB2 Universal Database in your organization.
This service engagement involves a phased approach to planning, installing, implementing, and
administration of DB2 UDB. The Planning phase of this engagement involves customized assistance with
planning for the installation, configuration, and implementation phases of DB2 UDB. This phase consists of
planning for hardware, software, communications, and database requirements.
The Installation phase of this engagement involves customized assistance with the deployment and base
configuration of the DB2 UDB environment. This phase consist of properly installing and configuring the
software components, identified during the planning phase, to support the DB2 UDB environment in your organization.
The Implementation phase of this engagement involves customized assistance with the implementation of
the DB2 UDB database and database objects such as table spaces, containers, and buffer pools identified during the planning phase.
The Administration phase of this engagement involves customized assistance with the administration of the
DB2 UDB environment. This phase consists of using the administration tools packaged with DB2 UDB products to manage the DB2 UDB systems in your organization.
Background Information
Hardware requirement planning involves properly sizing and configuring the underlying hardware components
(cpu, memory, disk, network) to support your DB2 UDB environment, including optimizing RAID disk
subsystems. Software requirement planning involves identifying required software components at the
operating system level such as communication protocols and other software packages required to support
the DB2 UDB environment. It also include identifying the individual components of DB2 UDB which will be
installed on the database servers, runtime clients and administration clients. Database requirement planning
involves identifying and mapping your organizations standards and procedures for the DB2 UDB environment.
Installation involves loading DB2 UDB software and fix packs on both the database servers and client
workstations. The installation procedure should be standardized for database servers, runtime clients and
administration clients. Configuration involves setting up the server and client workstations. The database
server workstation configuration includes creating and configuring administration instances, as well as
development, test, user acceptance testing, and production instances. This involves properly configuring
environment variables, registry variables, instance configuration parameters, communication protocols, authentication, and administration authorities for your DB2 UDB systems.
Implementing databases in the DB2 UDB environment involves creating databases and database objects
such as table spaces, containers, buffer pools, tables, and indexes, as required, in addition to properly configuring database specific parameters for your DB2 UDB databases.
Administration involves identifying routine database administration tasks that should be performed on a
regular basis. These tasks involve using the DB2 UDB tools to routinely perform database reorganization, collect statistics, and perform database backups.
